Transformer Steel Magnesium Oxide

The process for manufacturing transformer- grade silicon-steel involves the creation of an insulation layer of magnesium silicate on the steel, which results from reaction between magnesium oxide and silicon in the steel. The insulation layer must have minimum thickness of 1 micron and not exceed 2 microns. It must be uniform and smooth to allow low core loss and high resistivity.  The magnesium oxide has to have tightly controlled chemical and physical properties to enable the production of transformer steel having good magnetic properties and appearance.

  • Each silicon steel producer has its own parameters for processing the magnesium oxide into the insulation layer
  • Each customer requires a tailor-made product.
  • ICL Specialty Minerals produces magnesium oxide at two production sites (DSP & Scora): Both offer extensive expertise in meeting customer-specific requirements.
